Aphrodisiac Food – Is The Oyster Really An Aphrodisiac?

In Greek Mythology, Aphrodite is the Goddess of love and beauty. Venus, for the Romans, was
the equivalent of Aphrodite. Both of them symbolize passion, love and fertility. Therefore the word
aphrodisiac, taken from Aphrodite, is a substance used to arouse sexual feelings and emotions.

In terms of health, oysters are excellent sources of minerals such as zinc, iron, magnesium, calcium,
iodine, copper, and potassium. They also contain vitamins such as Vitamins A,B,PP,C,E,D and E. For
weight conscious individuals it will come as a relief to know that oysters are low in calories so they can be
consumed without any fear of gaining that extra bit of fat around the waist line.

How to eat oysters

Eating an oyster required a certain amount of finesse. Before eating it, one should empty the first
water and wait for the oyster to produce its second water. The second water ,which is purified, is rich in
minerals and salts and it also enhances the taste making the experience a even better one.
One can even eat an oyster raw and on its own. This reduces the calorie intake of the dish. One can
also add fresh lemon juice to provide that extra taste. In France, oysters are preferred to be eaten with
shallot’s vinegar which does not remove the nutritional value of Vitamin E contrary to the case of adding
lemon.

What wine to drink with Oysters?

The art of eating oysters requires the ability and knowledge of selecting the appropriate wine
that goes with each type of oyster. Forgetting this piece of information can lead you to spoil your
oyster eating experience and also some good wine. Oysters are normally eaten with white wine
but refrain from those white wines which contain too much sugar. Muscadet, Chablis and Quincy
are the common wines taken with oysters. One can also opt for champagne for some special
occasions.

Are oysters really Aphrodisiacs?

The presence of zinc in oysters assists in arousing sexual emotions as it leads to the synthesis of the
male hormone testosterone. Oysters also contain iodine which brings about an increase in the production
of thyroidal hormones which stimulates a person sexually. The oligo-elements are supposed to assist in
the production of sperms.
