Chocolate Aphrodisiac

No one can really tell whether chocolate is an aphrodisiac. It is an obvious fact that chocolate seems to be a favourite amongst women, as well as men. But its favouritism differs. Some say that chocolate stimulates sex, which is very widely debatable issue. While there are arguments that state that chocolate may well be an aphrodisiac, some arguments say otherwise.

The word ‘aphrodisiac’ comes from the Greek Goddess of Love named Aphrodite. Aphrodisiacs are meant to ‘put one in a good mood’. When it comes to chocolate, it is said to contain chemicals that do put one in a good mood. The very fact that as you consume chocolate it melts in a delicious way in your mouth due to our body’s temperature, gives chocolate a sort of pleasurable feel.

Historically, it has been found that the Aztecs believed that chocolate was in fact an aphrodisiac and forbade women from its consumption. But another study tells us that the Aztecs and the Mayans were the first to find its potential and celebrated its harvest with wild orgies. The question here is that whether the women were made to eat the chocolate or not.

In the 15th century, Johan Fransiscus Rauch forbade monks from consuming chocolate slating that it was a stimulant to arouse sexual urges. Madam Du Barry, Louise the XVth’s mistress, always served her lovers chocolate before letting them into her bedroom, Casanova found drinking chocolate a greater stimulant than champagne, while Montezuma always drank chocolate before entering his harem.

Scientifically, chocolate contains many amino-acids that have unique effects on the human body and brain. Phenylethylamine, a chemical present in chocolate, is already present in our body and released naturally when we’re in love. It is also a good cure for hangovers. Serotonin and Dopamine are also stimulants present in chocolate that draw pain away and puts one in a good mood. Serotonin, in fact, also gives a pleasurable feeling like one gets from the sun. Theobromine (often confused with caffeine) present in chocolate, helps improve one’s mood and has a lasting effect, and is also said t o uplift one’s mood.

But whether chocolate is an aphrodisiac or not, cannot be proved just yet. Though, it’s loved by all because of its amazing taste.
